So far we're looking at a 2014 Escape, 2012-ish Jeep Patriot (she likes it better than the Compass), a CR-V, or a Subaru wagon. She really wants a Subaru, but the ones in the budget have high mileage, and it doesn't even seem to make sense not to buy new. A new subie is the only budget-breaking option; anything else would have to be cheaper than $15-16k.

What are other decent suggestions?

We're getting rid of our 2002 Montero Limited, mainly for MPG reasons, hence the small SUV/wagon and AWD/4x4 conditions.

Have you looked at a 02-06 CR-V?

What about a 2009-10 Tiguan S/SE 4motion?

Yeah, that's an option. Problem with those is mileage, but there are plenty. I don't totally trust the 4x4 as much as other cars, though.

It's not a jalop-answer, but it is the truth: get the CR-V.

It'll be a low maintenance, efficient, inoffensive transportation appliance.

And you've already eaten most of the depreciation at that kind of mileage, so you probably won't lose your shirt if she wants to hope into something bigger in three years.

I would like that, but are they durable? Seems like it would be fairly useless on more rugged dirt roads, and probably expensive to fix. Otherwise I'm interested.

win a $10K scratch off and get a outback?

In all seriousness though, it is hard to find low milage Subaru's at a decent price.

All of my non Subaru recommendations would not fit any criteria :S (assuming German is out). Possibly Denver's CR-V suggestion?

Yeah, that's a good point. It's the responsible answer, but meh. A subaru would definitely be more comfortable, but still not as efficient. If we go that route all we have to do is pick a color; there are so many.

Do you really need AWD?

You can probably get a late-model Matrix AWD at a good price.

They can take anything a Patriot or Subaru can take. Plus they're a lot better drivers cars.

RAV4, CRV, Sportage, Tuscon.

My dad had one, that thing was bullet proof. A Mitsubishi lancer rear ended him, both cars were totaled. The lancer's front end was pushed back a couple feet, airbags deployed it was bad. The CRV started just fine, brakes worked, airbags didnt go off. The only issue was the rear tire pushed the frame back a bit where the impact was and the rear door wouldnt open. It was driven to a repair shop under its own power where it was decided to be totaled. If you want a safe small SUV with actual offroading capabilites and decent gas mileage (we averaged 23mpg) get that gen CRV

Hyundai Santa Fe/Tuscon? Another truth - I've rented more than my share of CRVs from Zipcar, and they've all been very competent vehicles. When we went to Exit 64(!) on the Long Island Expressway to get the kittens we adopted, the rain on the way back was biblical. The Honda stayed planted. Glad I had it that day.

True. Still feels "premium" but I suppose that has its perks.

Don't overextended on a car.

Don't lever up the LTV.

Don't take a 72 month loan.

(No) But we will eventually, and it can be useful in the rain/snow/dirt where we do occasionally venture. She wasn't blown away by the Matrix/Vibe even if it has AWD. Definitely a reliable/efficient choice but just not enough space. At that point a Subie sedan would make more sense I feel.

Yeah, I've driven a CR-V through some enormous puddles and I was impressed.

We just can't get excited about a Hyundai/Kia.

Not fan of Hyundai/Kias (yet), but the other two, yes. Hard to find Rav4s without crazy high mileage, though. I would jump on one below 50k miles.

The Liberty diesel should be a good choice for you. If you can wait until it comes out, the Honda HRV should also be a good choice.

How about a Suzuki SX4? Should be dirt cheap to buy since Suzuki doesn't sell new cars here anymore, but they still honor the warranty (7 years, 100k)

Hyundai has lately (last 8 years or so) displayed Japanese levels of quality. I think a VW, as desirable as they are, would cost more to service. High mileage Subarus might have the head gasket issue, but I think it's more endemic in certain of their engines. I suppose just figure out everything that's in the class, drive 'em all, and something might surprise her.

And if you want to piss her off, recommend the Audi AllRoad. We've had that discussion here before.

Another consideration - check and see if rental car companies are selling the vehicle you're interested in. The Car Guys have recommended this a couple time that I've heard - lower mileage, you know it's been serviced, and most people (like me) who rent a CR-V don't rent it to hoon it, we rent it to pick up cats or go to the Japanese grocery store across the river in Edgewater.

It shouldn't be too difficult to find a Subie with under 90k miles for under $16k. My WRX was $18k with 60k miles. Car Max has 33 Subarus under $16k with under 80k miles right now, and their prices are always a little high.

Wife's sister-in-law has an older Escape that is still going strong with over 200k miles. Check recalls, TSB's etc. - hers had some issues, don't know what they were or how serious.

I second SX4. They seem like fun little cars that can hold their own on dirt/snow.
